Day 1 of Vacation

July 21 - Home to Vicksburg, MS

Stats - 661 miles, 4 states

First of all the surprise departure went off perfectly. The kids had no idea what was going on, but once they realized we were serious they got ready in world record time :-)

We left a little later than planned this morning... fear gripping us as the key turned on the van and nothing happened but a clicking sound. After a jump start from the truck we hit the road at 7:00.



We drove through and saw a little of the tornado damaged areas in Joplin.

We made it to Little Rock, after a quick snack at McDonalds along the way, and the state capitol by about 2:00. We had thought about a picnic, but it was 104 degrees so we ate in the car. We had a lovely self-guided tour of the building.



 

Along the way the kids watched a whole bunch of movies, and Angela finally finished reading the Wizard of Oz on her nook. Driving went pretty smooth as we hauled through Arkansas from the northwest corner to the southeast. We went through the corner of Louisiana, and got to the Comfort Suites in Vicksburg, MS about 7:15.

Per the recommendation of the hotel clerk we went to Rowdy's catfish shack for dinner.  Except for our chairs having some leftover food on them, the overall dinner was pretty good.

We finished the evening with a quick dip in the pool and readied ourselves for bed, got another long day tomorrow.
